EXT. DESERT 1:33 AM
The silence on the small rural town is deafening, if silence can be just that. Nothing moves, nothing makes a noise. Everything in the town is closed for the night. Darkness covers every corner of the town. A few lights shine in the windows. These little flames are the only hint of human existence.

Something stirs nearby, moving quickly. The wind picks up slightly, tossing sand in the air. A door opens and slams shut almost instantly.

INT. HOUSE
We pull towards a small two story house, traveling through the window into a small kitchen. The sink is piled high with the evening’s plates and silverware. The family residing in the house is small, both parents young with a single child. A TV is on somewhere in the house and we hear quiet talking. We can’t pick out the words but we hear the voices. A clock ticks quietly on the wall nearby.

Something moves, a dark blob. We watch a glint of red, like burning fire. We hear the stairs creak to our left. We follow, stalking the footsteps. Another door opens somewhere upstairs. We cut to a hallway. A single nightlight lights the hallway throwing shadows across the hall. A door is open to our right.

GIRL
Hello? Who’s there? Is that you Ghost?

A young girl sits alone on her bed. She glances around fearfully. She clutches a small teddy bear. Her young brown eyes search the darkness. She is small and very young but we can’t judge her age. Her room is small. We see a single light near the door.

GIRL (WHISPERING)
I told daddy about you but he doesn’t believe me.
He told me not to think about ghosts.

WHISPER
No one will believe you. You’re just a silly little girl.

The whisper comes from a dark corner, the person or thing hidden in the shadows. Somewhere in the room comes a raspy laugh.

WHISPER
You’re just a silly little girl!

GIRL
Why won’t you go away?

WHISPER
They’re coming… coming to take you away.
They’ll wipeout this town… run… run! They’re
coming! I can see they’re coming!

The whisper turns to a malicious chuckle.

GIRL
Go away! Or I’ll tell Daddy again. Daddy won’t
be happy if he finds you!

WHISPER
I won’t go away… we won’t go away. They’ve done
it before and they’ll do it again. Run… run!
They’re coming… they’re coming!

The little girl pulls the covers to her chin and lies back on the bed. Outside the stars are out. She trembles with fear. We still hear the whisper chanting and laughing maliciously.

Something moves and suddenly the windows in the room are flung open. Outside the stars are out. The sky is clear and everything is silent. A figure sits on the sill, back to us. It’s shoulders are hunched and it’s figure is bent. The creature turns, fire red eyes turning on us. An evil grin is plastered to its face, showing sharp teeth.

The girl screams and dives under the covers. We hear movement downstairs, the sound of people running across the floor. The footsteps hit the stairs.

FATHER
Katie! What’s going on up there?

WHISPER
No! Death and destruction! They come!

The whisper has turned to fear stead of the original taunting. The figure on the window sill falls back, cowering in fear. The figure scurries for cover.

The girl, now identified as Katie, looks out the window, peeking over the covers. The sky has started to turn a hot red. There’s silence for a moment before…

BANG!

The desert sand is thrown into the sky and time seems to slow down.

We watch as everything in the room is torn apart. The objects in the room are ripped, molecule by molecule, turning into a fine powder. Fire rushes into the room, incinerating everything it touches. The girl disappears as the room dissolves to nothing. The light suddenly brightens to a blinding white before retreating. The roar ceases. What seems to have taken a minute only has taken a second. Burnt into the ground is the shadow of the little girl.

We see the shadowy whisper creature dart away in the darkness, red eyes flashing. It seems like the creature is fine. The scorching fire has not burnt it. Its eyes glow brighter now and we hear a yelp as it escapes the creatures lips.

GIRL
Daddy! Daddy! I told you Daddy! There was a
Ghost… you should have listened.

EXT. DESERT 23 YEARS LATER- 6:45PM
The location is a large desert. A small town rests amongst the sand and cacti. A single solitary van sits near a building, or what remains of the building. The town is in shambles, everything gone save the house foundations and a few metal walls.

WOMAN (V.0.)
It’s amazing… haunting.

A hand runs down a wall, brushing over a shadow burnt into a metal sheet. The metal is intact but the shadow is twisted abnormally. We can tell the shadow is that of a young girl but everything else is sketchy.

We pull back and see the woman’s face. She’s young, her blond hair pulled back. Her blue eyes are sharp. A badge on her chest reads AGENT ALEXIA CONNER. Another woman stands next to her. Her badge reads AGENT RACHEL DAME. Like Alexia she is young.

Her dark hair is free flowing, tossing in the desert breeze and her dark eyes seem bored. She yawns, brushing a hand over her face, batting at the sweat beaded on her forehead.

RACHEL
Spooky.

Alexia glances at her, marveling at her completely uninterested gaze.

ALEXIA
At least attempt to be interested.

RACHEL
Well… I hate acting and…

Rachel walks closer, leaning in a bit to get a closer look. She shudders.

RACHEL
This just creeps me out.

Alexia stifles a laugh, shaking her head.

ALEXIA
Creeps you out? Come on… you’re a top FBI
Forensic investigator. You’ve seen bodies worse
than this. It’s your job.

Rachel shrugs.

RACHEL
So?

ALEXIA
So?

She stands, eyes still on the shadow.

RACHEL
It’s not often that I see a shadow burnt into metal.
Now that I think about it… I never have seen
something like this.

Alexia laughs quietly.

ALEXIA
And you think it’s normal for me?

RACHEL
You do have a knack for finding strange things.

Rachel shoots Alexia a look. The two study the shadow a moment longer. Rachel shivers.

RACHEL
Ah! There’s something wrong with that!

Rachel throws up her hands and starts moving away. Alexia lingers a moment before following. The two trudge up a steep bank, heading towards a van parked a bit away. They climb in, the doors slamming shut.

INT. VAN 6:55PM
Rachel settles back into her seat, her arms crossed tightly against her chest.

ALEXIA
So… what do you think?

She asks her partner. Rachel remains silent a moment. Alexia starts the van.

RACHEL
Creepy…

She leaves it at that. There’s an odd silence as the car starts.

RACHEL
I just don’t like the place.

ALEXIA
Well… it’s our job to find out why a nuclear bomb
dropped out of the sky…

RACHEL
Sometimes things are best left ALONE.

Another silence.

ALEXIA
Any ideas as to why the town was chosen?

ALEXIA
I mean. Someone must have decided to drop a
nuke on that town. Cause bombs don’t just fall
out of the sky.

Alexia continues talking as if Rachel hasn’t said a thing. Another silence.

RACHEL
Not a clue. Don’t really care. Let the dead rest
in peace. I personally think this isn’t our problem.

While the two argue a road appears. Alexia drives back towards Reno.

ALEXIA
You sound superstitious.

RACHEL
Oh no! I just don’t think it’s right to be picking
around there. It’s like… desecrating a tomb.

ALEXIA
But I’d like to know WHY a bomb fell out of the
sky and blew the town away. It’s not often that
something like that happens. Actually… nothing
like this has happened.

RACHEL
It was over 20 years ago. For god’s sake… it’s
over and it hasn’t happened again. It was
probably some test gone wrong.

Alexia falls silent for a moment.

ALEXIA
Then I want to know why the test went wrong.
I want to know why the public never really found
out…

Rachel sighs, turning her eyes on the road. The two drive in silence, not looking at each other. After a few hours they arrive at a small motel outside of Reno. Rachel climbs out and heads indoors.

INT. MOTEL 8:45PM
The motel is obviously old; weather-beaten and worn. The two agents head to their joined rooms. The doors close to both rooms as we follow them into the rooms.

Rachel’s room is nothing spectacular. Actually, it’s nothing at all. On a small table she has her lap top set up. There’s a small TV on an ancient dresser. Her clothes are tossed in places. The lamp next to the bed is on and the shades are closed.

There’s a knock on the joining doors.

Rachel heads over and opens the door.

ALEXIA
Open your windows, it’s nice out.

We get a quick glimpse into Alex’s room. Her room is lit by natural light and all her belongings are neatly stowed.

RACHEL
I’m a vampire if you’ve forgotten.

Alexia glares at her partner.

ALEXIA
Anyway… here.

She hands Rachel a file. Rachel takes it, eying Alexia suspiciously.

RACHEL
Do I want to know?

She flips the file open, scanning through the information.

ALEXIA
The director just sent these in. All the
information on the town that they can find.
Anything and everything. Not much, but hopefully
it’s a start.

Rachel nods, shutting the file.

RACHEL
Ok… I’ll read it later. I’m tired and I want some rest.

ALEXIA
It’s only…

She looks at her watch.

ALEXIA
8:45… We’ve got work to do. Our report is due
in a week and we haven’t found anything. We
don’t have time to waste.

RACHEL
Well… I can’t think without sleep… so…

Alexia nods.

ALEXIA
I’ll be expecting you to be ready tomorrow to
work. Cause I don’t want to lose my job.

Rachel nods. Alexia stands a moment before leaving. Rachel watches Alexia leave. Alexia closes the door behind her.

RACHEL
This case is SO stupid.

Rachel walks to the bed, falling back onto the bed. She sighs, staring up at the ceiling.

In the room next door, Alexia sits at her computer, reading through files. She shuts down her computer and heads to bed. The lights shut off and we see a shadow flit across the wall.
